What is a consultation and why should I book one?

A consultation is a conversation either in our Queen Anne or virtual office where you can meet your potential therapist. During a consultation, you should expect to identify what brings you to therapy, what your goals for therapy are, and assess your comfort level. Questions you might ask your therapist include:

  • What type of therapy do you practice?

  • How have you treated clients with similar concerns I bring?

  • What are your available appointment times?

When assessing fit, your job is to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I feel comfortable talking to this person?

  • Can I imagine myself being honest with them?

  • Are they able to communicate clearly what they do?

  • Do our schedules align?

  • Can I afford their fee?

The therapeutic relationship (the relationship between therapist and client) is the NUMBER ONE predictor of successful therapy outcomes. It is essential you pick the right therapist for you! Read about our therapists and schedule a free, 20 minute consultation today.

How much does it cost?

Therapy is an investment in your mental and emotional well-being. Each therapists’ rate is posted on their profiles.

Seattle Counseling Center does not panel with insurance companies and all of our providers are considered out of network. We provide Superbills to our clients so they may seek reimbursement for their treatment. For additional questions or help understanding the expense of therapy, email us at office@seattlecounselingcenter.org.

What should i expect in a therapy session?

  • Weekly 50 minute sessions in our Queen Anne or virtual office.

  • Questions like, “How does that make you feel?”: Cliche? Yes! Relevant? Yes! Part of our job is pushing you to identify how to feel without asking you to change it. Yes, there will be an emotion wheel.

  • Mindfulness exercises like deep breathing, grounding, and body scans.

  • Problem-solving. Maybe the solution is right in front of us, it just took a fresh set of eyes to see it?

  • Accountability. Did you do what you said you were going to do? Are you skirting away from a difficult topic? Are you showing up? Putting in the effort?

  • Confidentiality. Your private thoughts are safe with us.

  • Flexibility. Sometimes what we think is the problem isn’t actually the problem.

  • Feeling heard, supported, and cared for. We’ve got your back. We’re in this together.

How do i know if therapy is working?

Therapy is working if you experience any of the following:

  • identifying new thoughts or feelings

  • relating to your thoughts or feelings differently

  • moving through the world differently, including trying new things or ceasing negative behaviors

  • feeling closer in relationship

  • courage to navigate difficult conversations

  • new understandings about the people in your life

  • new understandings about yourself

  • symptom reduction

How long will I be in therapy?

Truthfully, there’s no one size fits all. Your treatment experience will depend on your presenting concerns and your motivation and willingness. Some client’s concerns are resolved within a few sessions. Other times it takes months, years, or decades. Regardless, talk to your therapist about your treatment expectations or concerns.
